Sat Aug 6: We left Roseburg bright and early and headed north. Then we cut over to the coast to take the scenic route to Portland. We knew it would take more than double the time...but it was worth it.
Our first stop was at Newport's Yaquina Lighthouse. We hadn't planned this stop (gasp! something unplanned!!!) but we knew we wanted to see a lighthouse so this was perfect. We went through a cute visitor center/museum first. The kids could have spent an hour there but we had places to go and people to see. Then we drove out to the lighthouse. It was so picturesque. Unfortunately the line to go in was so long that we opted not to wait. Instead we took the steps down to the beach below. It is called Cobble Beach because of the unique cobblestone type rocks on the shore. They were so odd. It was really hard to walk on it. I'll admit I took a fall as the rocks slipped and slid over each other. There were also some neat tide pools on the beach. These one had a fair amount of marine life in them.
We stopped for lunch in Lincoln City. I was googling (on my phone) pizza places to eat. The place that got the best reviews was Humble Pie Pizzeria. So we tried it out. The pizza was delicious. The restaurant was a hole-in-the-wall joint with seating for 12 people. The theme was kind of a graffiti, tie-dye mix. The walls were painted bright yellow and people had written on every square inch of space -- messages, phone numbers, pictures, etc. Luckily it was all clean & family friendly. But still, my kids were a little stunned by the place.
Next up was the Tillamook Cheese Factory. We stopped here for a few reasons: factory tours are fun and usually offer free samples, they have yummy ice cream, my kids have an unnatural affinity for Tillamook cheese (even Colby will ask before eating an unknown cheese -- is this Tillamook cheese? -- I guess we have raised cheese snobs) and last but not least -- this was a place Eric and I had visited 13 years earlier on our honeymoon. Everyone goes to a cheese factory on their honeymoon, right??
Unfortunately we came on a Saturday so very little of the factory was in operation. Sad.

Our last stop of the day was in Cannon Beach. This is where Eric & I spent the bulk of our Honeymoon. It is one of our favorite spots and we were excited to see it again and to take the kids there. We had to fight for parking (or was it fight about parking? both!) then we walked down to the beach. It was a chilly day, so the kids had on jackets and we just planned to play in the sand, see the water and maybe stick our toes in. Can you guess how that turned out??
